  • A coal train has arrived at Burlingto Northern's yard at Alliance, Nebraska headed by 5 C30-7 locos - BN 5034, 5106, 5525 and 5566 surround ATSF 8109 on 12 July 1998
  • Burlington Northern SD40-2 8033 and C30-7 5583 are at the yard in Alliance, Nebraska on 12 July 1998
  • Late in the evening at Santa Fe Junction in Kansas City on 23 July 1998 BN SD40-2 6910 passes eastbound with HATX 500 (in Guilford paint) and SOO 771 in tow
  • Heading toward the crossing with the UP main line at Fremont on 9 July 1998 are Burlington Northern SD40-2 7002 and B30-7A 4013

  • Three Union Pacific GE C42-8W, 9495, 9527 and 9433 have Southern Pacific 'Tunnel Motor' SD40T-2 8568 for company as they accelerate through Fremont with a westbound double stack on 9 July 1998.

  • Union Pacific SD38-2 2808 and 2822 are pushing another cut of wagons over the hump at Bailey Yard in North Platte on 11 July 1998. 2808 was built as a SD38-2 for the CNW but 2822 was converted the previous year from a SD40-2 by UP, hence the different body styles (an extra fan).

  • The crew are leaving the cab of the leading loco, Union Pacific SD60 5972 at Boone in the early morning of 9 July 1998 as the relief crew walk in from a nearby crossing. The rest of the very mixed consist is made up of Southern Pacific B39-8 8026, Union Pacific SD40-2 2991 and Rio Grande GP40 3111. To further confuse the issue both Union Pacific locos had recently been repainted from Chicago North Western paint.

  • I found a quiet crossing on the outskirts of Marshalltown late in the evening of 8 July 1998 where the only signs of life were myself and three ostriches (didn't expect to find an ostrich farm in Iowa to be honest!). Our patience was rewarded when Union Pacific SD60M 6325 and Southern Pacific SD45T-2 9404 came rushing westward with a train of autoracks.
